第一回 トリノで「なにか」に出会えるでしょうか

| ２月10日、イタリアのトリノで第20回冬季オリンピックが開幕します。 さて、日本でウインタースポーツを親しみやすくしたのが、1972年の札幌オリンピックからでしょう。それまでのウインタースポーツといえば、北国の人のものか、裕福な人のものと思われていました。 札幌でオリンピックが開かれた1972年といえば、日本経済の高度成長も一息つき、大人たちががむしゃらに働いてきた過去を振り返る時期でもあったようです。 わたしは、大学進学を一年後に控えた大事な時期でもありましたが、高校の授業が終わるやいなや、脇目も触れず一目散に帰宅しテレビにかじり付いていたような記憶があります。 札幌オリンピックのメインエベントは70m級純ジャンプ（現在のノーマルヒル）。もちろん、笠谷幸生、金野昭次、青地清二の「日の丸飛行隊」の金・銀・銅メダル独占には感激しましたが、むしろ表彰式後にライバルのインゲマル・モルク（ノルウェー）が笠谷を肩車して健闘を讃えた姿には感動しました。 後日、笠谷選手が、 札幌も1964年に夏季大会を開催した東京と同様、オリンピックを機に国際都市に変貌しました。わたしも取材で度々札幌を訪問していますが、近代的な札幌の町並みを見ているとオリンピックの力の大きさを感じます。 しかし、そんな有形な変化よりも、札幌オリンピックの時のモルクが見せてくれたスポーツマンシップの方が、ずっと心に残っています。 そして、たまにカラオケで愚妻とトワエモワの『虹と雪のバラード』などデュエットで唱えば、美しかったフィギュアスケートのジャネット・リン（『ラブ&ピース』なんて落書きを分譲住宅になった選手村の自室に残したんですよね）と共に、笠谷とモルクの名場面を思い出してしまうのです。そのたびに、何度唱っても、若かったそのころにワープしてしまい、思わず目頭を熱くしてしまうのです。 はたして、トリノでは若者の心に残る名場面に出会えるでしょうか。 どんなに立派な施設を作っても、どんなに天候に恵まれても、若者の心に残る「なにか」がなければ、巨大なスポーツの祭典は「虚大なお祭」に終わってしまうでしょう。 その「なにか」は作ろうと思っても作れるものではありませんが、世界一流のアスリートたちが「なにか」をやってくれるだろう、と胸をワクワクさせながらトリノ・オリンピックの開幕を待っているところです。
